Dr. Michael D. Simmons, Orthodontic specialist, presents “A Healthy and Beautiful Smile” to 5th grade students from local Iredell Elementary Schools. This presentation is in recognition of February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Dr. Simmons has been sponsoring school field trips for area schools for nine consecutive years. Approximately 300 students have visited his office each year in the month of February. In years past, Dr. Simmons has provided various dental screening during Children’s National Dental Health Month. However, he believes that having students in the office for hands-on demonstrations and on-site observations provides a quality learning experience about dental and orthodontic care.

Dr. Simmons and his orthodontic team provide students with information about dental anatomy, care of teeth and gum tissues as well as how braces work. Each student leaves with an oral hygiene survival kit consisting of a water bottle filled with a toothbrush, floss, brushing timer, mouth mirror and toothpaste, along with an explanation of proper brushing techniques.

Each year, Dr. Simmons and his staff look forward to providing fun but informative dental education to area schools.
